Weekly Giveaway - The Nursing T Shirt Tess Bra by Nummies

Happy Friday.  So for the first time in weeks I totally forgot to post our winner first thing in the morning, so sorry about that.  Things are good here.  We are still enjoying our snow and our Christmas decorations.  I had my dr. appt for the month yesterday and all looks good.  For all my extra eating I expected to have gained more than I did actually so that was a nice surprise.  We have an ultrasound next week on Tuesday at the Open Arms Pregnancy Care Center in town.  They were nice enough to offer to let us come in for fun to do one.  As I mentioned before, we don't plan to find out the sex of the baby which is kind of hard for two planners such as my husband and myself but I think it will be fun to wait and be surprised especially since we already have a boy and a girl.  Something fun I discovered lately is that Hunter (my son) is a tea drinker!  He has been enjoying a daily cup of herbal tea with me and it is pretty cute to see him have fun picking out his flavor each day.

Ok so on to the giveaway news. . . our winner for the LilyPod this week was #3 as chosen by Random.Org.  This was Bree, congratulations!!  We will have the LilyPod on sale for 10% off for the next week for the rest of you.  Thank you for all your feedback last week, I am still sorting through it all:)!

Tessfrontviewicon_2 This week we are giving away a great bra for the holidays.  The Nursing T Shirt Tess Bra by Nummies.  The wonderful thing about this bra is that it has molded cups that hide your nursing pads and it can't be seen under your white shirts.  I have found that it is hard to find nursing bras with molded cups!

Another thing that I think is totally cool is that the straps are versatile and can be adjusted to be crossed in the back if needed!  So no matter what fun outfit you plan to wear for the holidays, this bra has you covered!  The retail price is $49.99.  You can win yours here by simply leaving a comment below letting us know which item in our New Items category you like best:)!  You have until Dec 4 at midnight PST to enter, good luck.

It is Cool to Breastfeed by Julie Johnson

Celebrity_brestfeeding For some reason we like to know how celebrities live and if they do the same things we are do as normal people. We hear of their fashion, dating, and, surprisingly, we also hear who is breastfeeding their babies. In a world so caught up in vanity, a lot of Hollywood moms obviously think it is cool to breastfeed their children.  Even though these moms give their children the best education, the most expensive clothes and the most professional nannies money can buy, breastmilk doesn’t cost a thing.

The wonderful thing about breastfeeding is that no matter what financial background we come from, each baby receiving their mothers’milk is receiving the same advantages.  It is no surprise to anyone that breastmilk is superior then artificial baby milk.  Do we really know what those advantages are?  Babies who are receiving breastmilk will not only have less incidences of diarrhea, ear infections, bladder infections, or RSV, but are also less likely to get asthma, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, or Crones disease as adults. Brain development and higher IQ are added bonuses.  Basically, whatever family diseases run in your family, you protect your child from those particular health concerns when you breastfeed.  That would certainly explain rock star Gwen Stephani saying, “Breastfeeding gives her super human powers.”

Please share immediate advantages you've seen in your breastfeeding experience that have been beneficial for you or for your baby.

Food Fun by Heather Ledeboer

Food_fun I know this idea is not something new but it works for us. . . sometimes when I want to get my son to eat something I will try making it into something fun looking.  We have been doing trees lately with grapes (for the leaves), carrots (for the trunk and grass), dried peaches (as clouds), and raisins (for the soil).  Hunter loves to eat these pictures and asks for more.  I think next time I will use canned green beans for the grass as He is not a fan of "green" foods and see how that goes.

Have any of you tried this trick?  Did it work?  What did you make?  What foods did you use?

I am dreaming of a white Christmas by Heather Ledeboer

Dsc_3326 Yipeee!  It is snowing!  Ok so I pretty much am reduced to a child again seeing the snow fall.  One of the things my husband and I missed so much when we lived in CA was seeing the seasons change.  We have been WAITING for the snow to come.  The weatherman said it would come today and no snow BUT we looked outside just now and behold the ground is WHITE:).  Winter is here.  Have I mentioned that it is dark here around 4PM?  Ya pretty great. . . we get to show off our Christmas lights that much sooner in the evenings LOL!

Oh yes Christmas lights, we have them up already!!  We are pretty into the holiday season. . . tree up, lights on, gingerbread house constructed:).  Now ask me if I have done any of my Christmas shopping and you won't be nearly as impressed, oh well:).

How about you guys?  Who has decorated already?  Lights up?  How about Christmas shopping?  Oh!  Don't forget to check out the Mom 4 Life Christmas Special--Get $10 for Mom 4 Life for every $50 you spend. Dsc_3323_3

Working Through That Thanksgiving Day Turkey Feast by Kim Evans, fit+giggles

Kim Happy Thanksgiving to you all.  WOW, Thursday’s meal was great…I thoroughly enjoyed the turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, pies, ice cream, etc…you name it and I likely had some ☺.  But, now that the big day and feast are mere memories it’s time to move those legs and exercise through it.  What our family is going to do is go on a hike.  As I’ve mentioned before, we live in San Diego, so thankfully the weather is letting us enjoy the outdoors.  We are going to all enjoy a hike together with some new friends.  I just recently joined a mommy’s group and a hike has been planned for everyone.  So, with our 2 year old strapped in the BOB and our 8 week old in the Baby Bjorn, my husband, dog and brother-in-law will join the rest of the group for the hike.  If you are able to do something similar, please remember to:
-    Pack plenty of water and a protein snack for you and the kids;
-    Apply sun screen and wear a hat (because even on the cloudy days the nasty UV rays are coming through, and to take it easy;
-    Exercise caution.  If you feel winded or pain of any sort take a break, sit down or stretch and when you’ve recovered give it another go;
-    Have fun and enjoy the time together as a family.

How did you burn off your Thanksgiving day feast?

Happy hiking,
Kim

Strange Dreams by Heather Ledeboer

Ok so pregnancy has its pros and cons.  The dreams that I get are not one of my favorite features.  I have been having the strangest dreams.  Last night I dreamed I was an animal (sort of a cross between a bird and a fish) and I was vacationing in a foreign country (actually I think it may have been Canada) with my passport and trying to find my way back home with my other "animal" friends.  This is just one example.  I have had lots of weird dreams, thankfully I can't remember them anymore although I am sure they would entertain you.  I am guessing it is the fact that it is harder to get into a deep sleep state because of all the urges to pee that helps dreams come more easily so likely any moms running on little sleep will know what I am talking about.

So how about you guys?  Have you had some strange pregnancy/new mom dreams?

Tips On How To Avoid Thanksgiving Weight Gain

Turkey_2

Thanksgiving is a time when families get together and share each others company.  However, it’s also a time where we surround ourselves with delicious food.  Choose a few of these weight control-tips below to help you maintain your weight while still enjoying delicious food on Thanksgiving day:

-Before you arrive to your Thanksgiving destination, make sure to eat a small, healthy snack/meal- such as almonds, yogurt, carrots, beans, oatmeal etc. (A small meal keeps you feeling full until dinner.)

-Don’t take a day off of exercising.

-Don’t eat everything in sight. Choose to eat only foods you really enjoy and spend the calories on those only.

-Avoid eating any appetizers.

-Don’t go for a second helping.

-Avoid any special sauces or gravy.

-Eat slow.

-Choose pumpkin pie over pecan pie and only have one piece.

-Drink water.

-Start a new tradition, take a leisurely walk after the big meal with your family and friends.

Happy Thanksgiving!

When they won't drink more than juice by Kristina B.

My three-year-old loves juice.  He also loves soda, but he doesn't get that very often.  At times, I've worried about nutrition and hydration, especially since getting him to drink some water or have a little more milk is, as the saying goes, like pulling teeth.

Here's another little saying: Variety is the spice of life.  It doesn't take much to get a child to think something is extra special by changing it ever so slightly.  So, when my little guy refuses milk or water, I add a bit of food coloring to it.  Sure, it doesn't change the taste, but he instantly feels like his drink is now something grand because it is a different color and drinks it up.

Try making colors that you know are special to your child, if that helps.  For example, make it purple if he loves Barney, or match the color of his lovie.  I hope this idea makes snack and meal times a little more peaceful in your house.

Jumping into the Postnatal Mom and Baby Exercise Program by Kim Evans, fit+giggles

Kim As someone who’s always lived a very active lifestyle, I’m continually looking for fun and creative ways to exercise, so working out with my baby became a fun way to hang out and bond.   As I mentioned in my last blog, over a year ago my friend, a physical therapist, and I launched a company called fit+giggles where we developed a postnatal exercise DVD to do just that.  In the coming weeks and months I’ll be sharing with you how I’m easing back into exercise together with my baby.

Getting started…

The first few weeks – For the first 3 days I was still in the hospital with my baby.  Nurses were around constantly helping me with all that I needed to do.  I found that I was sitting a lot and since I couldn’t leave the hospital quite yet, my husband and I walked the halls doing lap after lap after lap pushing Wyatt in the bassinette to get some movement in our legs.  We had a serious case of cabin fever.  As someone who is used to moving, walking, biking, running and exercising every day, sitting in a hospital bed for hour upon hour didn’t sit well with me.  I needed to move.  Walking was the safest and most comfortable exercise that I could do right off the bat with Wyatt.  Walking is something that, once cleared by your doctor, you can likely do as much as comfortably possible.  As with any exercise program, please get the approval of your doctor before you begin right away.  Not all bodies are created equal; some can do far more than others without pain, so caution and common sense should always be used when starting a new exercise program.  What I’ll be chronicling in the coming weeks and months is what my body is ready for.

Once we get home we quickly got a taste of what life is like with a newborn and a 2-year old, and the word “WOW” would be an understatement.  I’m finding that I’m chasing my 2 year old around while holding my baby all at the same time.  This sounds like an ultra simple task, but I’m finding that a lot of balance and coordination are needed to make sure everyone is safe.  I quickly experienced a number of pains and issues that I knew I could work through by exercising together.

PROBLEM: Cabin fever.
SOLUTION: Walk, walk, walk.  To get out of the house, my husband and I walked a lot.  We would load the 2 kids each into their own stroller, leash up the dog and head out.  We would walk for about 45 minutes at a time to get the heart rate up and to make sure we weren’t overdoing it.  When Wyatt gets a little older and bigger, I plan to walk with him in a Baby Bjorn or sling so that I can swing my arms, thereby loosening up my tight upper back.

PROBLEM: Tight upper back from holding the baby for hours at a time.
SOLUTION: A quick, safe and super effective exercise I do is one that I actually demonstrate in my “fit+giggles Postnatal Exercise DVD” called “tummy toning stretches”.  This stretch is simple…with alternating hands; I reach up to the sky as high as possible keeping my spine straight.  Alternating my hands for each reach I complete 12 reaches.  For the first set I reach straight up as if I’m trying to reach the highest point in the sky.  For the second set of 12 reaches, I reach up and slightly out.  And for the last set of 12 reaches, I reach up and slightly across my body twisting slightly at the torso.  These simple movements loosen my upper back, reducing tension in my upper back and neck.

PROBLEM: Sore lower back from rocking side-to-side over and over to soothe Wyatt.
SOLUTION: Another exercise that I find completely helpful at this point are hip sways.  This is another exercise that we demonstrate in the DVD in a section called “rock-a-baby.”  This is a twist or an extension on a movement that all Moms, Dads, Grandmas, Grandpas or any caregiver does.  The problem with the way most do them is that an over use injury will quickly rear its ugly head.  To get a fussy baby to calm down we typically hold them and swing our hips side to side in a gentle rocking motion.  As with anything, if it’s down over and over day after day an over use injury will arise.  So, to help alleviate this I do it in 3 different directions.  First, the traditional side to side fashion that we all do in our sleep.  Next I do this by rocking front to back and then lastly I calm the baby by gently twisting at my hips.  I find that Wyatt likes the variety in movement and I enjoy that break in monotony by doing all 3 positions to calm and sooth my new bundle of joy.

Week 3-4 post delivery – My body was starting to feel more “normal”, however I was still taking it easy.  I did more of the above but added time and distance onto my walks and incorporated some slight hills into the course.  To calm my baby in a new and fun way, in addition to the three moves talked about above; I incorporated bouncing on my exercise ball.  My son LOVES the up and down motion and it also challenges my sense of balance.  This exercise needs a lot of focus because my arms are busy cradling my baby so any slight tipping on the ball needs to be corrected with my feet and core alone since my arms are occupied.  After I started to feel confident sitting on the ball with my baby, I incorporated a slight bounce.  This rhythmic up and down motion is so fun for me and very calming and soothing for the baby.  I find that it works my thighs, gluts, abdominals, back and arms.  I also started rolling my hips on the ball while sitting as this helps loosen and relax my now shrinking hips and pelvis.

As I mentioned before, my family and I live in San Diego, California and our county was recently devastated by wildfires forcing us to stay indoors for a few days to escape the horrible air quality.  Given these circumstances we had to eliminate our walks and do more and more of the reaching, swaying and slight squats indoors to get a nice exercise program accomplished.  The reaches and sways are the same as described above, however I added slight squats to the mix.

The squats again are moves taken straight from the fit+giggles Postnatal Exercise DVD (www.fitandgiggles.com) in the section called “Mommy Squats”.  These moves are great not only for slightly working the thighs and engaging balance but they also engage the pelvic floor to work on tightening the muscles stretched out during labor and delivery.  These muscles, when worked in a multi-directional fashion, will help improve incontinence symptoms you might be currently experiencing.  To do “Mommy Squats” I squat in 2 different directions, to the side and front, with each foot for a count of 5 squats per leg in each direction.  I start in a stance that has my feet shoulder width apart.  To change up a basic squat, I turn my toes in different directions for each set, once to the front, out slightly and then in slightly.  I do all of this again with my feet in a narrow stance, almost touching, and then in a wide stance, that has my feet out past my shoulder width.  This exercise works my gluts and inner and outer thighs.  To do this exercise with my baby, I sometimes hold him in my arms or I place him in a Baby Bjorn or a sling.

As the weeks go on, I’ll keep adding descriptions of what I’m doing to not only get back to my pre-pregnancy shape and comfort level but to also bond in fun, creative and active ways with my new son.

Do you have fun exercises that you and your baby are doing together?

Happy bonding!

In health,
Kim

Thanksgiving Is Coming - Please Help Me Not Get Fat!

Can you believe Thanksgiving is just around the corner?  My 7 year old was asking me the other day how many more days until Christmas and all of the sudden it hit me - oh my gosh, a little over a month!  I don't know if it is because the weather has been fairly nice around here or what... but I'm just not quite in the holiday mood yet.  However, I did buy a big pack of various flavors of apple cider the other day at Sam's Club and that seemed to help us all get in the mood a bit.

What are your favorite holiday recipes?  Feel free to share in the comments section below.  Who knows, maybe we'll end up with a new favorite this year!

With the holidays comes the delicious foods we often only get a couple times a year.  However, it is also a time we seem to over eat and pack on a few extra pounds.  Therefore, my business partner and I have come up with a Healthy Thanksgiving Planner to share some of our favorite healthier recipes for the holidays.  Here are a couple of our favorites.

Dilled Smoked Salmon Spread

Serving Size: 1 tablespoon
Preparation:  Store tightly covered in refrigerator up to 2 weeks or in freezer up to 4 weeks. Thaw frozen spread covered in refrigerator about 8 hours. Serve with crackers.

1 8 ounce package cream cheese, softened (use fat-free or low-fat to reduce the fat)

Cracker or sliced vegetables, if desired

1.  Mix 8-ounce package cream cheese, the salmon, green onions and dill thoroughly.

2.  Shape mixture into ball or ring shape. Spread with whipped cream cheese. Sprinkle with nuts. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours until chilled.

Weekly Giveaway, Tooth Fairy Pillow

Hello!  Happy Friday.  I am writing you from Southern California.  Many of you know that we used to live in Southern California and moved to Idaho in June of this year.  Before we moved, my husband was offered a position working from home from the software company that he worked for (ESRI) in Redlands, CA.  We were thrilled with this option and accepted it and it has been working very well.  His company flew him down for training this week and we decided to also make it into a mini family vacation.  We have enjoyed visiting friends and family and after Trent (my husband) finished work today we went to Disneyland (we had bought season passes when we lived in CA and they hadn't yet expired:)!  It feels really weird to be back here, so familiar.  It is nice to "vacation" in a place that you know so well.  You don't have to look at a map and know all the fun things to do and you actually make time to do them (often unlike when you live there).  So we have been having fun.  I brought my video camera along just in case I would have a chance to do a video for the drawing but it just didn't work out to fit it in.

So this week I am using Random.Org to help me choose our winner for the tooth fairy pillow by Fairy Princess Designs.  We had 52 people leave a comment last week and I left at least one comment so I decided the first comment left would be #1 and so on and if it happened to choose a number that was my own comment it would default to the next number on the list (it generates a random list comprised of the number range provided).  Number 22 was our winner which is Julie Robinson, congratulations!  If you didn't win, you can get your own pillow for one week at about 10% off the retail price.  For the girl pillows, click here.  For the boy styles, click here.

Donkeyfront This week you get the chance to win a super cute LilyBugs Fun Bottle and Sippy-Cup Cover.  These adorable, unique covers offer an easy grip for little hands.  Children can grip on to the playful, tactile (they crinkle) ears, fins, wings, etc. of the many different creatures available.  Fitting most bottles and sippy cups, they also keep little hands warm during the cold season and prevent "sweating" of cups in hot weather.  Because they are machine washable they are a breeze to clean as well.  In addition, they also offer a smooth transition from bottle to sippy cup since they fit on both and can be something that stays the same even when the container inside the LilyBug changes.  This giveaway is for the "DonkeyBug" shown in the photo above.

Donkeyback To enter: I want to get some feedback from you.  Please leave a comment to this post with your thoughts on the items below to be entered.

I would like to know how important the YouTube videos that I have done in the past for the giveaways are to you.  I really enjoy doing them but am finding that they take up a chunk of time each week when I figure the time it takes to decide how to choose the winner, shoot the video (10 min), edit the video (30-45 min), save it upload it to YouTube (uploading it alone can take 30-55 min), etc.  I am trying to find some areas of my business that I can simplify (especially with baby #3 on the way) and am thinking this is an area I could spend less time in.  So please tell me, do you watch the videos each week?  Are they part of the reason you come back to enter?  Would you enter the giveaways if I didn't have a video and just choose the winner in a boring, random way each week?  I will enjoy reading your comments and please know you will NOT offend me regardless of how you answer, I want your honesty here!  If you are new to the contest and want to see what I am referring to, click here to see previous YouTube videos done for prior giveaways.

You have until next week Tuesday night (November 27th), midnight PST to enter, good luck!

To Co-Sleep or Not to Co-Sleep by Julie Johnson

I woke up yesterday morning to a local radio talk show host mentioning  the dangers of co-sleeping. I actually like this guy from past shows. He is funny and interesting. Yet, instead of hitting the snooze button, my ears were ready to hear what he had to say on the subject. The only thing I did like was that his wife was still breastfeeding their 9 month old and she brings the baby back into bed with her to nurse about 3-4 times a week. He doesn't think this is safe and wished that she didn't do it. He went on to mention all the "dangers" associated with bed sharing. Whether I believe in bed sharing or not, let's be practical here. The main concerns that we all hear are the risks of SIDS with co-sleeping. I find it illogical to think that it is safer for an infant to sleep in another room, down the hall no less, instead of being close to it's mother.

With my first two children, my bed was my bed. That was that. If I had to sleep on their floor for whatever reason, so be it. Then came the "princess" and I figured out that I actually slept better with her right there.  When you have a child with you in bed, where are the mother's hands? They are usually laying on top of the baby. When your child moves or lack of movement, a mother is aware. It is real hard to have that kind of reassurance when the baby is down the hall. Now I am not saying that everyone needs to co-sleep. Co-sleeping is kinda like childbirth classes, you prepare for it, study the pros and cons for your family situation and pay attention more to the "technique" of it.

I would like to hear people's opinion though. Have they done it, was it successful?
As for our "princess" when I was finally sick of being kicked in the back, I attempted to transition her back to her own room.  I will confess...she was ready for a twin bed. (And my back has since recovered.)

Simple Salt Dough by Kristina B.

The holidays are coming, and for me, that means crafts.  I love doing crafts, but with little hands in the house, I have to be careful about what kinds of crafts I do and when.  However, I love to include my children if I can, and it gives us a great opportunity to spend quality time together.  A great way to do this is to use salt dough.

If you've never heard of salt dough, it's something akin to modeling clay.  If you do a quick internet search, you'll find a great number of salt dough recipes.  Choose one that suits you.  However, to keep it safe for the little ones, choose one that doesn't have any extra non-safe additives, such as perfume.  A simple salt dough recipe consists of salt (obviously), flour, water, and sometimes cooking oil.

Follow the recipe for mixing and drying.  To add safe colors, consider "painting" with food coloring after the creation is dry, or knead food coloring into the dough before you model it.  Mixing part-way will give you a marble effect.  Of course, for older children who won't be tempted to put things in their mouths or knock things over, acrylic paint is fine once the model is dry.

Have fun and let the kids be creative.  Use cookie cutters to make Christmas ornaments, let the kids make hand prints, or let them make something all their own.  But remember: if your child says that blob is a dog, then it's a dog.

A New Baby Is Born And So Is A Need To Exercise by Kim Evans, fit+giggles

Kim_2 Wow, it’s simply amazing how you forget, no matter how many children you have, how all consuming a newborn is.  They are full of wonder and amazement and you find your wondering how you’re going to get anything done (for yourself) now that they’re a part of your life.  My husband and I welcomed our new son into our lives just over a month ago and we are so in love with him.  He’s our second child, we also have two-year old daughter who loves being a “big sista” and is already very helpful. Yet with all the help in the world I still find that my “to do” list doesn’t shorten, rather with each passing day I have more I want to do yet no time.

By way of a quick introduction, my name is Kim Evans, I’m the co-founder of fit+giggles, a mom of 2 (as you now know).  I’m married to a wonderfully supportive husband and we have a 6-year old Vizsla/Weimaraner dog with boundless energy.  My family and I are California natives and we live in San Diego.  Exercise is my passion and with everything I do I try to incorporate fun and creativity into it.

Growing up I always had one sport or another that I was involved in.  My love for exercise was formalized just over a year ago when a friend of mine and I officially opened the “doors” to a health and wellness company called fit+giggles…check us out at fitandgiggles.com.  The mission of fit+giggles is to reduce the aches, pains and injuries of new Moms while increasing their strength, agility and balance through improved function to achieve a healthier mind, body and spirit. Our first product is a postnatal exercise DVD that allows Mom’s to exercise with their babies…and I must add that the idea for the company was born from necessity.  This business was developed when, as a brand new Mom, I simply couldn’t find the time to exercise and I was experiencing all sorts of “new Mom” aches and pains.  My friend, a physical therapist, helped me exercise my way away from those pains.  With that, we set out to educate anyone and everyone we could reach on how they to could rid their body of these same pains.

This past January we were at a baby/new mom trade show in Los Angeles and had the amazing fortune of meeting Heather, the founder of Mom 4 Life.  Heather asked to sell our DVD on her website, and because she believed in our vision she welcomed me to contribute to this blog newsletter.  What a great way, I thought, to share my exercise passion and program with other new Moms. My hope is that together we can all get back into our pre-baby shape, learn safe and functional ways to do everyday activities like squatting to pick up dropped items, lunging to reach for the binky that’s rolled behind a chair or stretching to alleviate tension in the upper back, etc. all while bonding with our new babies.  My goal is to share with you what I’m doing on a regular basis to get my body back to feeling happy.  So with the intros out of the way, here we go.

October 1, 2007 – This is the long anticipated day that we welcomed Wyatt into this world.  My doctors advised me that exercise was something I shouldn’t be focusing on and that I need to allow my body to heal.  Hmmm, sounds like a fine idea but we all know that as soon as you have your new baby, your back to using your muscles in ways that they haven’t been used during the past 9 months or so.  You might not be officially exercising (I’m sure I can speak for all of us when I say “who has the energy for that anyway”), but we are all rocking side to side for hours on end soothing our baby, bending over and squatting in funny ways to pick up dropped blankets, burp cloths, and binkys, and doing the oh so awkward and straining reach to get the car seat in and out of the car without waking the baby.  These are just a few of the things we do that, without a good night’s sleep, will likely cause you to break a small sweat or start to pant.  We quickly find that we’re using our muscles right away just to do everyday activities with the baby safely cradled in one arm.  Life doesn’t give us the 6 weeks window that doctors want us to take without “strenuous” exercise.

With that being said, please join me on the journey of getting our bodies ready to tackle everyday activities safely…let’s take it together.

How did you start your journey back to your pre-baby body and comfort level, I'd love to hear about it?

Happy Bonding,
Kim

The "office" of Mom 4 Life video

Here is something just for fun. . . we wanted to make a video highlighting our staff and a bit about what they do and who they are.  It took us a week or so to put it all together but we have it done and I would love to share it with you.  Click here to see the short 3 minute clip or click on the image below.  For those of you who are fans of the sitcom "the office" (as Britta, Anneke and I are), I hope you will feel that we did it justice!  Let me know what you think (and I am concerned if the volume is too low so let me know about that too).

Is There Lead in our Children’s foods? by Jenny Lee

Food Yes. Since lead is present in the environment, from both natural and man-made sources, a low level of lead is present in many food products. Lead is a naturally occurring metal found in small amounts in the Earth’s crust. However most of the lead found throughout the environment comes from human activities.

During the several months, we have heard of many toys been recalled by the news because of lead exposure.  Such toys that been recalled due to lead paints are Thomas The Train, Elmo, Dora toys and Fisher- Price.  To see other recalled toys, click here.

The most common source of lead contamination from human activities is likely to be from lead-based paints but exposure can occur from a number of sources:

• Eating foods or drinking water that contain lead

• Spending time in areas where lead-based paints have been used and are deteriorating or being worked on

• Having hobbies in which lead may be used

• Using ceramic ware that has a lead glaze.

Children are poisoned by mouthing objects with lead dust on them, such as fingers and toys, by chewing on surfaces coated with lead paint, such as window sills, or by eating paint chips.  The most likely sources of lead in drinking water are lead pipe and brass fittings used in household plumbing.  About 5 percent of children ingest enough lead from food and beverages to be at risk for adverse health effects. The FDA has estimated that about 20 percent of all dietary lead comes from canned food and two-thirds of that results from lead solder in cans. Acidic foods can leach lead from the solder in the seams of cans. Lead enters the food chain from soil, deposition from the air, containers and food processing equipment.  Lead can also get into your child’s foods by certain dishes, lunch boxes, and/or glasses you may use.

Want to test your home for lead?  You can buy lead test strips (a link of where to purchase lead test strips are on the bottom of my home page- www.beezsnackshop.com) and test your children’s toys, canned foods, lunch boxes, dishes, paint etc.  If you do find anything that contains lead let us know and get rid of it right away.

Why did I decide to talk about lead under Food for Thought?  Simple, Lead is a very dangerous metal that enters our kids bodies very easily and without us being aware of it.  It can make our children very sick and in severe lead exposure, death. However, there are things you as a parent can still do in helping your child’s body fight lead from a nutrition point of view.  Believe it or not iron, calcium and garlic can enhance the excretion of lead in the urine.  So if you think your child has been exposed to lead make an appointment to see his doctor but also provide them with high foods containing iron, calcium and garlic.

Peek-A-Boo Bag winner, a new giveaway item--Tooth Fairy Pillow, and a chance to win $116.00 from Mom 4 Life!

Happy Friday everyone!  I hope your week went well.  I had a visit to my dr. yesterday for an ultrasound to confirm how far along I am in my pregnancy.  They determined that I am not 9 weeks but 11 weeks and 3 (now 4 days).  So it is nice to finally know AND to be farther along than previously thought:)!  I was so thrilled to see the ultrasound of the baby and how it is all totally formed already!  We don't think we want to find out the sex this time around (we did for our first two kids) just for those of you who are wondering.

Several of you have asked how I am feeling.  My answer during the day is pretty good and in the evenings, not so good.  This is an improvement from a few weeks ago however when I feel yucky all day long.  My sweet friend at [bump] maternity is sending me a preggy band to help with my "evening" sickness and I am so interested to see if it works for me (I will let you know).

Ok so on to the giveaway. . . you guys liked the Peek-A-Boo Bag, that is so great because I really liked it when I first saw it too and hoped you would.  Hunter helped me pick the winner with a 2 min. game of Shoots and Ladders.  To see the video, click on the image below or click here.  Our lucky winner is Dee!  For those of you who didn't win, we are offing the Peek-A-Boo Bags at 10% off this week (until November 15th).  We are currently very low on inventory because several of you got one so if you don't see what you want, contact us and place a pre order with the discount and we will ship it out as soon as our next shipment arrives.

Getting It Done with a Baby Carrier by Kristina B.

Kristina The dishes don’t do themselves, and if they did I’d probably be very worried and sell my house.  That being said, the dishes, along with many other chores have to be done, and probably by you.  With very young children, that isn’t always easy.  But I don’t have to tell you that.

Personally, I like to put my baby in a sling if he’s needing some attention but I need to get some chores done.  However, he loves to be entertained.  If he’s in the sling, and I stop walking for a minute, he may start crying.  That’s not very conducive to getting things done.

You may have had the same problem with your sling or whatever baby carrier you use, if you use one.  If you put the baby down, he’ll scream.  If you stop walking, say, to wipe off a counter, he’ll scream.  One day, I found a way to fix this. While working, if you have to stop walking, try to talk to the baby about what your doing in your best, happiest, baby-talk voice.  For example, if you are unloading the dishwasher, you may count the cups as you remove them and tell him they go in the cabinet.  With my baby, not only did it keeping him from crying, but he actually smiled as I talked to him.

Alternatively, if you have a carrier that allows a front carry position where the baby is facing out, he may enjoy seeing what’s going on and be very pacified.  This also works for my baby, but remember to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and age recommendations for positioning your baby.

Both of these are ways to include your baby in your day-to-day chores, and he may even learn a bit in the process.

Does your preschooler have a "naugthy" imaginary friend? Parenting Magazine wants to know!

Hey mommies,

My 7 y/o's Perspective on Breastfeeding by Julie Johnson

Kelsey_on_stairs (K at 18 months)

This week I am preparing to teach the CAPPA Certified Lactation Educator Training Course this weekend in Salt Lake City, UT and while preparing for this up coming class, I am reviewing breastfeeding DVD's. While watching a mom and her baby learn how to breastfeed, my 7 y/o daughter walks into the room. Below is a commentary of her reaction (word for word) to this video. I thought it was interesting and kinda funny.

First thing out of my daughter's mouth…"Yuck! That is a real breast!"

"Did you breastfeed us?"— ('Yes K, I did,' I answered back.) "Well, that's good."

"It (the movie) keeps showing 'real' ones!"

Then the video started discussing sore nipples. K is watching intently, and then asked, "Did C, N and I hurt you?"

(I said, 'Yes.') She said, "We were only babies we didn't know what to do."

While continuing to watch, she mentions, "This will help me know what to do when I get older."

…Then she continues to watch as the DVD shows a demonstration on latching,   "Oh that is what we're suppose to do."

She ends it by saying, "…now can we finish coloring?"

Mind you she would attempt to breastfeed her teddy bear in public when she was 3.

Do any of you have any stories to share on how your older siblings have reacted or what they have said about breastfeeding?

The call for customization-Custom Made for Kids answers

There is something special about your own name.  It's no wonder we love items that can be personalized (especially for our kids).  it is really fun to claim something as your own and have your name displayed proudly.  When I used to teach second grade I made a point to have several places in the room where each student could see their name.  On Mom 4 Life, we offer several items that can be customized such as jewelry, onesies and t-shirts, backpacks, blankets, and more.

Custommadeforkids But something really fun that I recently came across are books by Custom Made for Kids.  This company allows you to order a book (or even just a gift certificate for a book) and personalize it with things like your child's name, birth date, a favorite sports team, favorite sport, names of friends/siblings, your neighborhood street, vacation spot, grandparents, pets and more.  There is even a dedication page that is customized.  I had their book called "The First Adventures of Incredible You" made for Hunter and it is so fun to read it with him.  I love reading to my kids and we have a lot of books, but I thought this was a super fun way to add something unique to our collection.  I love the idea of offering a gift certificate to new parents to have their own book made.  Check out Custom Made for Kids and see what you think!

Have any of you ordered a customized item before?  What was it? Was it for your kids or a gift for someone else?  If it was for your kids, did your kids enjoy it?
